The Sexual as Humourous

Living in a pays that’s overshadowed by the Catholicism or in the greater picture, Christianity, I somehow associate the heightened pressure of machismo with it. I do think of it as clichéd as prudence which seems to be more and more irrelevant in these chaotic times. In a more personal matter, I find fashion as one big tool that I could use to challenge the ideals of masculinity. I've always been burdened by these rules or ideals of masulinity present in society particularly Philippine society which really has a very strong fixation towards machismo as a standard of masculinity or as an inevitable aspect of it. Walter Van Beirendonck on the other hand delivers an unconventionally beautiful collection that challenges ideals of masculinity making it rather humorous.

I've been seemingly amused by how Van Beirendonck reinterprets the "sexual themes" or that's just the way I may see it as you may have a totally different perspective towards his works. The pieces from his Spring-Summer '09 défilé are suggestive of the phallus but it does not necessarily associate the phallus to something carnal or sexy but rather something else. Walter's works continue to amaze me as I find his work highly conceptual, explicit, and challenging. I know a lot often say that intellectualizing about fashion is a dead-end because at the end of the day we all want to look good but there is that never ending charm of the otherwise.

I've warmed up to Walter over the year myself. The more I look at these absurdities the more I enjoy them. Like you said the sexual aspect has nothing to do with being scandalous. Its more festival and carnival than bordello.
